HLS, MPEG-DASH & ABR

Smart devices are all equipped with video viewing features – and Ittiam products make those videos look and sound better than ever.

Standards that streamline the complete workflow, comprising encoders, delivery networks and the client players are now in place. The most popular technology to stream media content is HTTP live streaming (HLS) which is an HTTP-based media streaming communications protocol implemented by Apple Inc. A competing standard, which is emerging, called mpeg-DASH, an international ISO standard, compiled by the Motion Picture Experts Group is also gaining stronghold in the market. Ittiam’s vividPlay enables our customer to use either of the streaming protocols. The purpose of DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) Technology is to simplify and drive convergence in the delivery of IP video.

HLS and MPEG-DASH technologies are gaining traction along with next generation compression technologies like HEVC. The combined power of compression efficiency of HEVC and adaptive bit rate technology makes video streaming over the internet work like a dream.

In addition to providing a standards based framework, the key difference that Ittiam’s media streaming SDK brings is the intelligence built into the adaptation logic. This is crucial to providing better user experience by seamlessly switching between different bit rate/quality versions with low startup and almost no re-buffering.

At Ittiam, HLS & MPEG-DASH stacks are tightly integrated into our next generation video streaming products. Ittiam provides end-to-end workflow solutions to transcode video on the Cloud and to streaming it using HLS & MPEG-DASH to Ittiam’s vividPlay client.

At Ittiam, MPEG-DASH is tightly integrated into our next generation video streaming products. Ittiam provides end-to-end workflow solutions to transcode video on the Cloud and to streaming it using MPEG-DASH to Ittiam’s vividPlay client. MPEG-DASH is also integrated into several Broadcast Media SDKs for encoding and transcoding.

Markets

Media SDKs and Cloud workflow solutions for encoding and transcoding. Targeted at both real time and offline adaptive bit rate streaming specifically tuned for scenarios like OTT.

Client SDKs and Cloud workflow solutions for deploying adaptive bit rate online video services on tablets, smartphones, set top boxes, smart TVs, etc.

Ittiam Advantage

Ittiam’s algorithms embedded in the implementation cover the following 3 aspects of streaming video experience:

Bandwidth optimizationBandwidth optimization
A learning algorithm is used to get better adaptation to the network conditions as the session progresses. Fine tuning for 3G and Wi-Fi networks independently.
Matching content to computeMatching content to compute
The inherent capability of the device to decode is used to guide the adaption logic in requesting for the right complexity of the subsequent video clips.
User behavior based intelligenceUser behavior based intelligence
This technology can be used to improve the quality of experience by using the same bandwidth to achieve a perceptually better representation of the content.
