Ittiam to Showcase Its Latest Generation In-Flight Entertainment Systems at the APEX Exposition 2012

September 17, 2012

Ittiam Systems announced its latest generation seat-back and server systems to be showcased at APEX EXPO 2012. Enhancing the passenger experience has been the core driver of its latest solutions bringing together a custom media player for Android that redefines limits of in-flight entertainment and a server platform to address the emerging multi-screen requirements of in-cabin entertainment.

“Ittiam’s latest seat-back solution combines in-depth IFE expertise with the next generation technology such as Android based HD grade media clients and multi-channel HD encoder/transcoder for head-end servers amongst other products. We have made a conscious decision to use Android and enhance the media framework to deliver a user experience that would not be possible otherwise,” said Bhavani Gopalkrishna, Senior Manager, video networking system. “In addition to delivering great experience on installed seat-back units we have also closely followed the adoption of Personal Electronic Devices (PED) as a medium of delivering entertainment. Ittiam has developed custom application for off the shelf tablets delivering a similar experience in flight on a range of off the shelf tablets.”

The server systems have already been used in other applications such as broadcast for multiscreen transcoding and multi-channel decoding. The server solution has already been showcased at NAB show and IBC earlier this year. However, the seat-back solution will be introduced for the first time at the APEX EXPO 2012.

The latest generation seat-back solution leverages Ittiam’s enhanced media stack for Android™ to enable critical IFE features such as low latency announcements and multi-screen synchronization and to provide an enhanced IFE experience with features such as one-touch moving map access, Video on Demand (VoD) menu through video carousel and tiled composition of multiple video windows. An instance of the seat-back solution shall be demonstrated on the OMAP4460 platform from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), running Android™.

Salient features of seat-back solution for Android™ include:

  • Simultaneous High Definition decode with Picture-in-Picture
  • Support for Video-on-Demand and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS)
  • Support for live camera feed and moving maps
  • Operates alongside other Android applications

Ittiam’s product demonstrations will be showcased at booth 1357 in the APEX Expo 2012 from 18th to 20th September 2012.
